Hey everyone! I’m Kia. I am a mother of 4 children (3 girls and 1 boy). I have two bachelors degrees (exercise science and nursing). I am a Registered Nurse (RN) and an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC). I am also a military spouse. Currently my family is located on the island of Oahu, HI. I do local consultations and virtual consultations for momma’s across the US.
How did I get here? Well when I was 17 years old applying for college I had absolutely no idea what I wanted to do but teen me thought I wanted to be different that my mom and big sister (both RNs) so I went to the school that offered me a full scholarship and proceeded to change my major multiple times over the next two years. Eventually I realized I was obsessed with pregnancy and babies so I decided to do exercise science to be able to go to school to become an occupational therapist so I could work with neonates/infants. Well then my husband came into my life again. I knew him while in high school but we had lost touch when I went off to college and he joined the military. We got married my senior year. Well that obsession with pregnancy and babies derailed that graduate school plan so I decided to go to nursing school instead I saw how family friendly it could be with my mother raising 8 children as a full time RN. While in labor with my first child I was answering questions about my nursing school application. I started nursing school when she was 4 months old. That is how I became a RN. Now I became an IBCLC because after having my first child I realized the lack of support and lactation education available. In the hospital, the nurse just pushed formula at me and the lactation consultant looked at me from the doorway then left. I struggled breastfeeding her initially. I now know she actually has oral ties but I did manage to breastfeed her for almost 2 years. It was not for a few years after she was born that I knew what an IBCLC was actually. I figured I would work with women and infants as a nurse and do my best to support them in that role. Then I learned I could take it further. A friend of my oldest sister actually decided to offer lactation professional education and we were a part of her first cohort. That gave me the last step I needed to sit for my IBCLC exam. At this time I already had 3 children and was living overseas. Now we fast forward, I am back in the US teaching at a local hospital. I realize I really love teaching so now I am launching different classes to support moms.
